Gold (XAUUSD) Margin Calculator

This Gold margin calculator helps you quickly estimate how much margin your XAUUSD trade will lock up based on your lot size, leverage, and account balance. Use it before opening a position so you don’t accidentally over-leverage your account.

If you also need to compute your exact position size for each trade, use the Gold Lot Size Calculator.

Margin is the amount of money your broker β€œsets aside” to keep a trade open. High lot size + low leverage = higher margin. Always check how much margin a trade will use so you still have enough free margin for drawdown and other positions.

How To Use This Margin Calculator

Before you start, make sure you know your account balance, the leverage your broker gives you on Gold, and the lot size you plan to trade.

  1. Enter your Account Balance in USD.
  2. Type your Leverage (only the second number: for 1:500, enter 500).
  3. Fill in the current XAUUSD Price (you can copy it from your trading platform).
  4. Enter the Position Size (lots) you want to open (e.g. 0.10, 0.50, 1.00).
  5. Keep Contract Size at 100 oz per lot unless your broker uses something different.

Click CALCULATE MARGIN and the tool will show:

  • Required Margin – how much of your balance is locked for this trade.
  • Margin % of Balance – how much of your account is used.
  • Position Value – total notional size of the trade in USD.
  • A text summary you can copy and save in your trading journal.

Formula used: Required Margin = (Price Γ— Lots Γ— Contract Size) Γ· Leverage.
